So here we are...the end of the road. My last official appearances as Miss New Jersey 2009. What a ride this has been, and such a wonderful journey. I have memories that will last a lifetime. I am truly so grateful to have been blessed with this honor of representing the state of New Jersey. I always dreamt about being Miss New Jersey, and now that my year is over, I still can't believe that I was Miss New Jersey.

In the blink of an eye you become a celebrity, and all I could think my entire year, was that I was just an everyday girl, I'm nobody special. I learned so quickly the importance of living in the moment and cherishing the experiences in front of me. It feels like someone hit the fast forward button, and all I want to do is hit the STOP button, haha!

I have been so busy the remainder of my year preparing for after my year is done, as well as going to all of my appearances, so lets get to the fun stuff!

SATURDAY MAY 29TH, 2010
I had the pleasure of judging in the Jersey Coast's Habitat for Humanity Lego Building Contest. We colored houses and then the children were broken up into teams who designed their own Lego House. The winning team build the most incredible Lego house. The imagination these kids had was unbelievable and completely blew me away! I also won tickets to a Trenton Thunder game that from NJ 101.5 Radio!

WEDNESDAY JUNE 9TH, 2010
I traveled to Wildwood for the St. Ann's Catholic School D.A.R.E graduation. As a keynote speaker, I congratulated the students for a job well done, and encouraged them to continue to use the skills they learned from the program in the real world. D.A.R.E is such a wonderful program, and a great way for students to learn the importance of abstaining from the use of Drugs and Alcohol. They even had a police dog demonstration, which was so much fun!

SATURDAY JUNE 12, 2010
The first part of Saturday afternoon I was the featured guest at the Graeme Preston Foundation for Life. I sang the National Anthem and signed autographs for the kids. This is a wonderful foundation who provides assistance for numerous other charities and believes in helping everyone, not one specific cause. Graeme Preston was a 12 year-old boy who died from injuries he incurred in an automobile accident. The family was truly an incredible group of people, and I had a wonderful time!

Saturday night I was off to the Meadowlands Racetrack for the infamous Tom Alturi Miss New Jersey Final Race. This was the last, but one of the most exciting appearances. I sang the National Anthem and presented the trophy to the winner of the race. I also got to ride in the started gate car! That was the most incredible experience to see the horses running right at you! The SBOA sponsored the dinner, which was delicious! I enjoyed the night at the track, and it was certainly an experience that I will never forget!

So now it's time for Miss New Jersey week 2010. I can't believe the year is coming to an end. I have truly been so blessed, and I can't wait to see who my new "sister" will be! 3 weeks...just 3 weeks, and there will be another Miss NJ. I have been so busy that I just can't believe that the time is flying by. You know everyone tells you to enjoy every minute, and you always reply "yeah, yeah" but you never really think the end is coming, but it does. Way too quickly. It truly takes my breathe away, thinking about all that I have experienced during my year, and there are no words that can ever accurately describe what this adventure has been. I believe I am one of the luckiest girls, because never did I ever think that I would be a Miss New Jersey. And even though it's been a full year, it still seems like it was all a dream.

But onto more exciting things...I haven't written since April, so I'm going to try and talk about all events since then...here we go!

St. Michael's Golf Tournament--I had a wonderful day taking pictures with all the golfers, and participating in this very exciting day! Even though I didn't get to drive in the golf carts, I still got some sun!

Martin Mollusk Day--I was the featured guest to kick off the start of summer! We waited anxiously that day to see if Martin the Hermit Crab saw his shadow, which he did! So that means we have an extra week of summer! Woo hoo!

Shirley Mae and Gilda's Club Walk- I had the honor of singing at this wonderful walk honoring all those suffering or have suffered from Breast Cancer. This was truly such an incredible experience to be amongst so many amazing people. I certainly was so nervous to sing for such a large crowd! Thank you to Joan Lucas for being an amazing hostess, and for taking care of me! :-)

Right from the walk I went to Cranbury, NJ where I was a guest with my gym at the Anti-drug day. I had the chance to talk with some students about living healthy lives, as well as participating in their t-shirt fashion show!

New Jersey Champion's CMN Kick-off--I had the pleasure of being a part of the day to send the New Jersey Champions Mackenzie and Michael Wight on their journey, and tremendous experience! I had the chance to honor them by awarding them crowns. I can't wait to hear about their amazing trip. I also had a chance to talk with one of my judges, Phillip Salerno. Phil is such a huge supporter and it was so wonderful to talk with him about my year. Not to mention to thank him for providing me this amazing opportunity.

Millstone Middle School- I was honored as the Keynote speaker at my alma mater, Millstone Middle School. I spoke with the 8th grade students about following their dreams, and not limiting themselves. They were so much fun! I also had the chance to see many of my former school teachers! Talk about a blast from the past!

Monroe Village Senior Facility-I continued my busy day, heading to Monroe Village where I spoke to residents, and sang a few songs for them. My mother works for this facility, so it was very exciting to meet many of her patients and residents! They were all so sweet!

Secaucus Day Parade--This was such a fun event, who doesn't love a good parade?! This was the first parade they had in almost 10 years, so I felt honored to become a part of the first in so many years! I signed so many autographs that day, I think I got carpel tunnel just from that day!

Princess Party--5 young girls won a prize to spend the afternoon with me, and eat a healthy snack! We also played games, and danced around. I felt like a kid again! They were the sweetest young girls, and I just had so much fun being a princess with them!

JP Case Middle School--Bright and early Monday morning I was on my way to Flemington, NJ where I was the featured guest for the 7th and 8th grade students. I spoke to them once again about my platform, but also about life and making the right decision in their life. So many questions, and I even demonstrated what it felt like winning, by bringing 5 students down to talk about being in Top 5. The students laughed their heads off!

After all of that I'm exhausted, but I'm not done! I need to get back to studying for GMAT so I can go to business school, and I'm also taking life guarding and CPR classes, so I can work this summer! So I certainly have been going non-stop! But I love it!

Well this has certainly been a very busy week and a half! So let's see, where to begin!

First, on March 17th, I was off to Summit, NJ where I participated in the Summit YMCA Healthy Kids Day! I had a great time signing autographs and selling my cookbook. It was a definitely a cold day, but everyone was so much fun, and I was able to discuss my platform with many young children! It was such an honor to be a role model to young children.

Then on March 18th I went to Mt. Laurel, New Jersey to the Burlington YMCA Healthy Kids Day! It was such a busy day, and I signed practically 200 autographs that day! I couldn't believe how excited everyone was to meet me. I was so honored and once again pleased to share my platform and belief in healthy kids for a healthy future!

Later that week I was a guest judge at Rider University for the Color me Violet pageant to raise money for Domestic Violence. I had the pleasure of sharing the panel with Miss NJ USA, Miss NJ Teen USA, and my very own little sister Andie! We had a so much fun judging the pageant, and I was so impressed with the young women. They were all very talented, and so well spoken. I want to congratulate Jasmine Adams, Miss Popular, and Destyne Pitts, Miss Violet.

Then on Friday, I was off to Ramapo College for CMN's Dance-a-thon. I had so much fun judging the Dance Contest, as well as spending some time with my friends, Kaitlin, Mackenzie, Michael, and Amara, who are all CMN Children. Mackenzie and Michael are this year's champion children nominees. These children just are so extraordinary and are such an inspiration to me!

That evening Sally and myself drove all the way from Mahwah to Ocean City, to be ready for Miss NJ Orientation the next morning. I literally drove the entire length of the state of New Jersey, Over 150 miles total!

Then Saturday morning I was up bright and early for Miss NJ Orientation, and I am so excited to see what lucky young woman will be joining this tremendous sisterhood! I am so proud of the each of the contestants, they are truly a very talented group of young women! I know that any one of the women can make a great Miss NJ! Come out to support these young women on June 17, 18, and 19th!

I was so excited because I also received my Miss America DVDs! I was hoping to see how my talent was, as well as swimsuit and eveningwear. I must say, I know it wasn't perfect, and there were things I wish I could have done differently, but overall I definitely felt great about my performance. I truly felt that I represented NJ very well, and did everything I could to be the best me possible. It just wasn't meant to be for me!

Well don't forget, even though April is almost over, it is still Healthy Kids Month, but most importantly, our children's healthy is something we must pay attention to every day. They are the future, and their well-being is crucial. I hope that everyone might be interested in buying my cookbook, I'm selling them for $3.00. There are recipes that are healthy and affordable for families!

With April being Healthy Kids Month, I want to take this time to share some thoughts on how to lead a better lifestyle. I truly believe that our health is our most important asset, and that is why I'm so passionate about platform, and believe in making a difference in the lives of Americans. Children are especially important because they are our future! I'm going to include some tips and recipes for children this month to help parents with some ideas to get their children healthy!

TIP #1
Stay Active!
Being active for children can be something as simple as jump rope or hula-hoop, even hop-scotch is another great way to get children moving! If necessary, MAKE the time for your child to be active, by getting them involved in intramural activities. This is a great way for children to socialize and make friends as well!

Kid Friendly, Healthy Sloppy Joe’s

Ingredients

12 ounces 90%-lean ground beef
1 large onion, finely diced
2 cups finely chopped cremini mushrooms, (about 4 ounces)
5 plum tomatoes, diced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup chili sauce, such as Heinz
1/4 cup ketchup
8 whole-wheat hamburger buns, toasted if desired

Preparation

Crumble beef into a large nonstick skillet; cook over medium heat until it starts to sizzle, about 1 minute. Add onion and mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until the vegetables are soft and the moisture has evaporated, 8 to 10 minutes.
Add tomatoes and flour; stir to combine. Stir in water, vinegar, chili sauce and ketchup and bring to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thickened and the onion is very tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve warm on buns.

Make Ahead Tip: The filling will keep in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Per serving: 233 calories; 6 g fat (2 g sat, 2 g mono); 28 mg cholesterol; 31 g carbohydrates; 14 g protein; 5 g fiber; 436 mg sodium; 504 mg potassium.

So as things come down to the last two months of my reign as Miss New Jersey 2009, I have had a lot of time to begin to reflect on one of the most amazing years of my life. I'm at that point where I've started to look as to what is next, of course there are things that I have been thinking about since I returned home from Miss America, but now it's time to get serious.

The remaining blogs over the next 2 months will certainly be very reflective and help me to bring together everything that I have experienced. There have been so many amazing memories, it's going to take awhile to sort through everything in my mind! But even since I've returned home from Miss America, my life has completely changed, which makes me realize that this is just the beginning to the rest of my life. I have no idea what is in store for me, but that is the beauty of life!

I know that there is something, well actually, someone that everyone is dying to know about since it is a change in my life, and I figure it is a good time to share, even though I have tried very hard to protect him from this crazy pageant world! But for those of you without Facebook, yes! It's true! I, Ashley Shaffer, have a boyfriend, and his name is Mike McDermott. He and I go back to 8th grade, where we first dated each other, and went our separate ways in high school, but somehow found our way back. It's funny how life works out sometimes, but I'm so happy it worked out this way! He is truly a wonderful guy, and I'm very blessed to have him in my life :-)

I want to congratulate the last young woman to punch her ticket to Miss NJ 2010, and that is Roopali Pendse, Miss Stars and Stripes 2010! We now have 27 young women competing for the title of Miss New Jersey 2010, and I'm so excited to see who the next lucky young lady will be! Our orientation day is on April 24th, and I can't wait to see all the young women together!

This weekend will prove to be a very busy one with two appearances with the YMCA, one in Summit, NJ and one in Burlington, NJ for the Healthy Kids Day! I can't wait to enjoy the festivities! Before I get into my events from the past few weeks, I want to take the time and send all my love to Silvia Barthold, the State Field Director for the Miss NJ Education Foundation. She has been very sick, however she is slowly making a recovery. It will be a very long road for her, but she has a wonderful and very loving support system behind her. There is no doubt in my mind she will conquer this illness, and I want to let her know how much I care about her, and how thankful I am to have her in my life. She has always been such a huge supporter of mine, and I am forever grateful to her for that. We love you Silvia!

I was reminded the other day how I have less than 3 months til I pass on the crown to the next Miss New Jersey. And I truly can't believe how fast the time has past, it feels like I've only just been crowned Miss NJ. I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to represent, and I am so thankful for the adventures I have had the chance to experience. But, I still have time, so I won't dwell on the sad part.

I have had a busy couple weeks! Last Tuesday I was the invited guest to the Galloway Township Wellness Fair, that was held at Galloway Township Middle School. I had such a great time meeting with families and even making home-made trail mix! Yum!

Later that week, I was a featured guest on the "Let's Talk with Gary Gellman." It was so much fun to meet with Gary again, and speak with him about the Miss America pageant. It will be aired sometime in the coming weeks on Verizon Fios 1.

On Saturday I had the honor of attending the Miss Philadelphia pageant held at the Mandell Theatre at Drexel University. I was so excited to see Miss Delaware and Miss Pennsylvania, since we hadn't seen each other since Miss America. We had such a wonderful dinner with the judges, and I even had the chance to sit and talk with the Interim President of Drexel University, Mr. Chuck Pennoni. I want to congratulate Andrea Helfrich, the new Miss Philadelphia 2010, and I want to thank Kevin McAleese for inviting me, and treating me to such a wonderful evening!

I can't forget to congratulate 4 new local titleholders who have punched their ticket to Miss New Jersey 2010! First, Carissa Polumbo, Miss Middlesex Area 2010. I had the honor of attending her crowning. However, since I wasn't able to attend the pageant, I want to congratulate the Michele Goldberg, Miss Northern Lakes, Melissa Ruiz, Miss Tri-County, and Jeannie Revier, Miss Gateway! My little piddle monster!

Welcome to March everyone! This is probably one of my favorite times of the year, beside Easter and Spring on it's way, I LOVE MARCH MADNESS!! Since most of you know my passion for sports and the sports industry, I'm right at home!! I made my brackets and everything!! Don't forget to watch out for the Marist Women's BBall Team, as they take on #5 Purdue from Berkley, California! Let's go RED FOXES!!

March has turned out to be a wonderful month, and the beginning of a lot of new things in my life! My puppy Callie, is still a little terror. We are having such a hard time house-breaking her. I've also began studying for the GMATs to go back to business school, which is never fun, but time to move on with the rest of my life, but enough of that for now!

Onto some fun things, on March 7th I was on my way to NYC to film a pilot for an online program. We're hoping that this gets picked up, and turns into a profitable project! It was an exhausting day working in front of the camera, but I loved every minute of it! I miss television!

On March 14th, I was on my way to Kearny, NJ for the United Irish Association of Hudson County, even through the monsoon and rain! I had such a wonderful time with my driver, Doug AKA Doug E Fresh, and his awesome Jeep Wrangler. It was a little disappointing that we couldn't put the top down, but we still had a nice time driving in the parade none-the-less! I want to thank Doug, as well as the parade committee for having me a part of the parade!

This week certainly has been one of the most inspiring and exciting weeks in my life. Although I haven't had many appearances, there are so many new things that are happening in my life, and I just can't wait to tell you about them.

Monday I had a conversation with the National Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, and they would like to use me as a possible spokeswoman with their organization. Things are still being decided because they have so many new projects, and they are finding where I will be able to fit in the best.

Tuesday was National Pancake Day!! I hope everyone went out to have their free pancakes to support the Children's Miracle Network. I had the opportunity to go to the Brick IHOP where I met this year's Champions, Michael and Mackenzie, as well as last year's Champion Kaitlin. These children were so inspiring and some of the most wonderful individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting. Their stories are so incredible. They are truly inspiring young people, who overcame insurmountable odds. They exemplify true American Heroes, and remind me why I love my job, and I am so honored to work with such a wonderful organization.

I am so excited to share the news that I bought a new PUPPY!! Her name is Callie Anastasia Shaffer. She is a 9 week old, Cavachon, which is a Cavalier Bichon Frise hybrid. She certainly is keeping me busy, and my hands full trying to train her. But I am so excited to have a little dog back in the house, she is definitely my little "peanut!"

After some time of trying to get myself into a normal routine and dealing with all this snow and ice that is still around, I'm finally back on track! I've had a busy couple weeks organizing some exciting things, as well as getting back to my very important job of being Miss New Jersey!

One of my first interviews that I did upon returning from Miss America was with The Messenger Press, and then I was off an doing a taping with Assemblywoman Carolyn Casagrande, and her brand new talk show "Conversations with Carolyn Casagrande." I was so honored to be a part of this inaugural taping, and I look forward to seeing the finished product! She is such a wonderful woman, and I'm so honored to be a part of her district. I hope we can continue this great relationship we have established.

Then on "Fat Tuesday" I celebrated Mardi Gras with the Epilepsy Foundation of Eastern PA. I was their invited guest to help honor their "King" for 2010, who was from the state of New Jersey. I had the honor of crowning, Tom Reis, and the Mardi Gras King. I also had the honor of meeting Dave "The Hammer" Schultz from the Philadelphia Flyers. Dave was a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, so it was very exciting for me to meet a sports star!

Wednesday, I was on my way, although I was battling a bit of a terrible cold, to Pine Brooke Care Center in Englishtown, NJ to be a part of their Hope for Haiti Concert. The care center employs numerous Haitians who have many family members who were affected by the tragic earthquake. I was so honored and pleased to be a part of that event, and sing for the residents as well as for the employees. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Mayor of Manalapan, Andrew Lucas.

Then Saturday, I was off to attend the Miss Cumberland County Pageant! I want to congratulate all the contestants on a job well done, and would like to welcome Holly Hunsberger to the Miss NJ family and congratulate her for winning Miss Cumberland County 2010! Finally! After a long hiatus from my blog, I'm back! My apologies that I have not had a chance to update before Miss America, but I will quickly share some of the things I did before I left for Vegas.

I first was given 2 complimentary tickets to see Turandot at the Metropolitan Opera. So Sally and myself enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Met, and it just blew me away. It was my first time ever going to the Met, and the production was just incredible! I was so excited to have seen the opera first hand.

Then I was an honored guest at CHOP with Miss Delaware, Heather Lehman for the "Miss CHOP America" Pageant. Unfortunately, we were not able to visit the children because of flu restrictions, but they broadcast Heather and myself Live to the kids rooms. Heather and myself sang for them and answered some questions about ourselves. We had a great time, and were awarded with flowers and banners :-)

Finally, I emceed the Miss New Jersey's Outstanding Teen Pageant, and I want to congratulate my new little sister, Andie Babusik, MNJOT 2010. I had a wonderful time getting to know the girls, and I'm so excited for the 6 months ahead with my new titleholder! Of course, I will always miss Brenna because she is truly an extroadinary woman., but Andie is a beautiful girl, and she is only 13!

Now onto MISS AMERICA!!

It was the time of my life, and the greatest opportunity to have been blessed with. The women I spend the 10 days have left an indelible mark on my life, and I will never forget the memories and experiences we shared together. I was so proud and honored to represent the great Garden State at Miss America, it was a dream come true.

I was able to walk on the Miss America stage, ride Gondola's at the Venetian, walk in the Fashion show on the longest runway in America, ride Go-Karts, and get to know 52 amazing women from across America. It was exhausting, and we were basically held prisoner for 10 days, but I wouldn't change anything. I promised myself, regardless of the outcome, I was going to have fun, and I did! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I wasn't about to let it slip through my fingers. And as much as my feet were so mad at me by Saturday night (they were swollen for almost three days after) every moment on that stage was wonderful.

As I look back, of course I was disappointed that I did not place higher in the competition because I felt that I had competed to the best of my ability, and deserved a spot in the top 15. However, I wouldn't change a thing, like I said I felt that I had done everything to the best of my ability. I was the best Ashley I could be. I prepared as much as I could, and I knew that there was not another thing I could do to have prepared anymore. I realize that everything happens for a reason, and whatever that reason is, I'm sure I will find out soon enough.

For now, I look forward to the rest of my year and what it has to bring to me. I will also continue to study for Law School, as that is part of my long term goals. I've been approached by some organizations to work with them as a spokeswoman, and I am also going to prepare training for a MS Charity Bike Ride! I'm so excited, and I know that there is so else for my future.

I'm also trying to convince my Mom and Dad to buy a new puppy!! We haven't decided what kind of dog we want, but we hope to maybe rescue a dog.

I'm already booked for some appearances next week, so look for my blog with updates for my upcoming adventures!!

Well I think I can say that I am probably the luckiest girl alive. My send-off was a complete success, and one of the most incredible nights of my life. I think it's safe to say I finally feel like Miss New Jersey, not like it's taken long enough, but I felt like a rockstar on Saturday night. From the wonderful cocktail hour to the final "See you again" dance, I was just on cloud 9, but it went by in the blink of an eye!

As a former Miss Liberty, it was honor to welcome Katharyn Nicolle to the sisterhood. She did a lovely job, and I look forward to seeing her on the Miss New Jersey stage. We now have 3 former MNJOTs competing for Miss New Jersey, which is very exciting! I also want to congratulate Michael Kelly and a job well done with his pageant, it was an excellent production, and Chris Saltalamacchio, Mr. Delaware 2008, did a fabulous job as Master of Ceremonies.

And tomorrow night, I will be attending the performance of "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini, which is the opera where "Nessun Dorma" is from. But I'm not just going to see "Turandot," I'm going to the Metropolian Opera to see it!! I am still in shock because I have never been to the Met, so needless to say, I'm ecstatic!! I promise lots of pictures!!

We are getting down to the wire, so things are crazy! And next week is certainly going to be action packed!!

I hope everyone will come to the crowning of MNJOT 2010, Saturday January 16th at 7pm located at Millville Senior High School. I will be the emcee for the evening, along with the beautiful Brenna Weick. We both will be performing that evening as well! It will be such an exciting night as I find out who will become my new little sister (even though I don't want to loose Brenna :-(...)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

Well the clock is ticking, and Miss America is now only 3 weeks away. I know I say this a lot, but I really can't believe how fast time is going. I am getting so excited, but first my send off party is coming this weekend in Atlantic City!!!

We've been busy planning, and I am just so excited to be spending the evening with my family and friends celebrating this once in a lifetime opportunity! Slowly everything is coming together, and everything for Miss America is moving along! So now it's time to enjoy the ride!

Onto some adventures, on December 15th I was the guest speaker at Scotch Plains High School during their physical education classes. I had a wonderful time meeting with the students, and speaking to them about my platform, encouraging them to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them and living healthier lifestyles. I even sang some arias for them because they were so excited to hear me sing.

Later on that evening I was honored by the Scotch Plains Town Council with a Proclamation, and they named December 2009 "Ashley Shaffer Month" in honor of me and my quest for the Miss America crown. I was thrilled to be honored, especially since I had never had an entire month in my honor!

Unfortunately, the other events that I had for December were canceled on December 19th because of the Nor'easter that came and dumped almost 30" of snow in my area. It took us about 2 hours to dig out our cars,

I think I remember talking about an event I attended in NYC in November where I met Susan Lucci...Well, I finally have pictures! As you can tell, she is so tiny and she just celebrated her 62nd birthday last week! So Happy Belated Birthday Susan!

Another week down, and another step closer to Miss America! We received the Miss America Competition Magazine, and my heart nearly stopped. I could not believe that my picture was in there as a Miss America contestant. Everything is becoming a reality, everything I have dreamed about for so long, is happening! It truly makes me sit back and think to myself how fortunate I am to have this exciting opportunity to represent this state. Vegas here I come!! Woohoo!

So last week I was busy doing prep work for Miss America, followed by a busy weekend at both of my fundraisers at Tesi Bridal and Swoozie's!

I spent the other night at, Rosanna's apartment, and just was blown away of her amazing view of the NY skyline! So I woke up, watched Regis and Kelly, drank coffee, and stared out at the view! That was such a great morning and stress reliever!

I had a great day at Tesi's taking pictures and signing autographs for the customers! I also enjoyed the day with Victoria Fiola, Miss Coastal Shore Outstanding Teen, because Tesi is a tremendous supporter for the both of us! She has been so gracious and generous to donate my On Stage Question dress, and also to help me raise money, so I must send her a huge thank you for being so supportive of me and the pageant!

On Sunday, I made it to Swoozie's amid the monsoon that was happening outside. And I just had the best time with the customers taking pictures and helping them pick out some great gifts for the holidays! The owner of "The Frame Smith," the store right next to Swoozie's brought his two dogs into the store, Hank and Pogo, and my heart melt! I could not resist but to take a picture with the puppies! Hank, the Lab, was training to be a seeing eye dog, and he was just so sweet. I want to thank Kelli, Sam, and Jenn for being so friendly and helpful! After everything was done, I did a little bit of shopping myself, and picked up some really cute gifts for my friends! I can't wait to see their faces!

Well I did it! The first Miss NJ to graduate Dale Carnegie! I am thrilled that I was able to accomplish this, and I am so proud of how much the class has benefited me. It was such a pleasure to get to know everyone, and I hope to continue the relationships that we've gained from this fabulous class. My Dad was there for graduation, and he was patient enough to sit through the entire class. I'm so lucky he did that for me!

Saturday I was off in the rainy/snowy weather to Woodbridge Mall where I collected "Toys for Tots" with the Marine Corps League Avenel Detachment. It was a great day, and we definitely collected a good amount of Toys! I will be with them again on December 19th! I hope that everyone will come out to donate!

On Sunday we enjoyed my 5K race at Mercer County Park, even though the weather didn't quite hold out enough, we still had a great race! Another eventful week has passed, and I've officially begun my Miss America countdown, and as of today we are two months out from Miss America! It will be here before I know it! It feels like I was just saying that Miss America was six months away! I think it's really starting to set in that I will be competing for Miss America!! CRAZY!

I'm getting to the end of my Dale Carnegie Course this week, and I'm so excited because I will be the FIRST Miss NJ to graduate from the course!! I'm so excited, and so proud of myself for completing the course! Now the trick is to implement all the tools and principles I've learned into my daily life!

Well it's been a busy couple weeks, and I have so much to share! First, I was the invited guest the "Annual Autumn Celebration" at the Columbus Citizens Foundation in NYC, where Susan Lucci was being honored for Lifetime Achievement. Mr. Joseph Monticciolo and his wife Mary Ann, invited me to come and listen to the fabulous opera singers they had to honor Susan, and I was blown away! Michael Amante and Jeanette Vecchione were phenomenal talent's, and Michael even sang "Nessun Dorma" he gave me chills! Susan was a pleasure to meet, and she really is sooo little!

Before the event I had a chance to sit down with Alicia Luciano, Miss NJ 2002! She is such a doll, and a wonderful woman! I'm so honored to be her "sister!"

The following day I spent in Red Bank with Duxiana again, and met the Mayor of Red Bank. The time flew by, but it was such a beautiful day! And I want to thank them again for their continued support.

Then before I knew it, I was getting ready for Philadelphia thanksgiving parade...where did the time go?! I had a wonderful dinner with Miss Delaware, and Debbie the Executive Director of the Miss Delaware Pageant. We celebrated Sally's birthday, and just had a wonderful evening. The next morning we were up bright and early for the parade. I had such a wonderful time sharing the day with my little sister Brenna, Miss PA-Shannon Doyle, and Miss PAOT and Miss DEOT. I also had a chance to meet Miss NJ USA Chenoa Greene, and Miss NJ Teen USA Erica Syzmanski. We were so lucky we had such great weather for the parade!

I had a very quiet Thanksgiving, but I have so much to be thankful for! I really am a very blessed young woman, and I'm so proud of my life and everyone who has touched my life!

Friday I was off and onto the Millville Christmas Parade! I had such a wonderful time, and rode in a really beautiful blue Mustang Convertible. I enjoyed the evening with Joan Cooper, my little sister Brenna, Miss Allstate Ashleigh Udalovas, Miss Coastal Shore-Brianna Durand, and my Dad! My Dad was my security for the evening, and he had a blast riding in the parade!

Sunday I headed to Bridgeton to be in their Holiday parade, and I had such a great time with the lovely Barbara Casarow! Her and her husband welcomed me into their beautiful home. I was on this great float from Blondies, but I didn't realize how high I was in this float until I nearly smacked a stoplight with my head. I also played limbo with some electrical wires. No one ever told me that being a "Stuntwoman" was part of the job description of Miss NJ!!

Well, onto my appearances, Wednesday I was honored to be a part of the new GOYA Warehouse opening in Pedricktown, NJ. I share my story of how Goya products have been a major part of my life, especially growing up with a Puerto Rican Babysitter who fed me Rice and Beans, which is my favorite food next to my Oatmeal Pancakes! I also sang the National Anthem and cut the ribbon! The food was wonderful, and I just had so much fun meeting with Goya Executives, and would like to thank Rafael Torro and his assistant Giovanna for having me be a part of the spectacular event! Friday I was up bright an early to head to Gloucester Township Elementary School, and was the special guest for the 33rd annual "Americanism Day." Sponsored by the AMVETS, this event was designed to educate children on the importance of patriotism and important symbols of our great nation. This year they had a special ceremony called the "The White Table Ceremony," which is dedicated to all the POW/MIA in the Armed Services. It was a very emotional, but beautiful ceremony. I was so impressed with the children and how proud they were to take part in this event. I think it's so wonderful how dedicated Principal Gentile and his assistant, Ms. Katherine Murphy are to making sure this event takes place!

I spoke to the students about coming from a military family, and being a descendant from a signer of the Declaration of Independence. I also encouraged them to get involved in their communities and give back to everyone who has sacrificed for their freedom. I closed the show by singing the "Armed Forces Medley." All the servicemen in the audience were impressed by how I knew all the words, and I didn't forget them! (Little did they know, I had to lock myself into my room the day before so I learned them) But I had such a wonderful time being with the students, and getting to meet them all!

Saturday I was once again up bright and early to head to Ridgewood, New Jersey where I took part in a charity event with DUXIANA. I helped to collected toys, cloths, and other items for children involved with "Project HOPE," a mission which is dedicated to helping children in Haiti, and providing them with a better life. From there I then went to Summit, New Jersey to collect more things at the Summit DUXIANA store. I had such a wonderful time, not to mention that we had the chance to try out the fabulous "Dux Bed," which is probably the most luxurious bed I have ever tried! I want to thank Ann-Britt Paulsen for having me at the event, and I also want to thank her for giving me a wonderful "Duxiana Down Pillow!" I haven't such restful sleep in such a long time! I will be in Red Bank this coming Saturday to collect more things for Project Hope from 11-1, so I hope to see everyone come out and support this wonderful cause!!

I'm so sorry for the delay in getting my blog post up from the weekend! Unfortunately my camera died, and I thought Sally gave me my camera back after the pageant on Sunday, but when I went home it wasn't there! Thank goodness she had it, but I haven't been able to upload any of the photos from my events!

Let's see where to begin...well on Friday I was a part of the NJEA Convention where I was a part of the American Heart Association and the invited speaker for the NJEA Higher Education Luncheon. At the NJEA Higher Education Luncheon, I was treated to a delicious lunch and met with various New Jersey college professors. I spoke to them about my college experience, and how it has catapulted me into so many wonderful opportunities, as well as enriched my life. Saturday, Sally and myself attended the AIDS/ Hyacinth Foundation Gala, which was such an honor to be a part of. I sang an opening song, and had the honor of meeting State Senator Joseph Vitale and State Senator Loretta Weinberg who were honored with the first Ricky Jacobs Awards. It was so great to hear that the Foundation achieved their goal of $75,000 for the event! Truly remarkable!

An oldie but a goodie, from the Columbus Day Parade that was just e-mailed to me

I haven't seen Sally in awhile, so I am sorry that I don't have a silly stories to tell. But, for those of you who have been following me status' on Facebook, it might have seemed like I was going to breakdown because of the NY Giants. Well, we know they are doing terribly, and I can't figure out what happened, but nonetheless, I was just a bit over-loaded with some things that had to get done, but I am good now, and we are back on track! Thank you for your concerns!

So over the past week and half not much as happened in the way of appearances, but I have been very busy on other fronts. Starting with organizing my 5K Race that will be on December 6th. We have been very busy organizing sponsors and donations. The Mercer County Park venue is going to be great, and myself and the Race Director, Lynn Kuderka have been very busy organizing the location. We are so excited to have set a photographer and a DJ for the event, and we hope that everyone will come out to support this great cause! Don't forget we are also having a One Mile Fun Run for the children!

Since Rosanna has returned home from Italy we have been very busy organizing my send off to Miss America, so it's full speed ahead, invitations will be mailed shortly! Finally, the final sketches are coming in for my new version of the Coloring Book, and because I've gotten such a positive response about the cookbook, I am looking to find a sponsor who would be willing to make this a really great cookbook!

Yesterday, I went to Trenton to visit the Mon Cheri showroom to look for some new dresses, and Trenton is only about a 35 minute trip, and thanks to google maps, it turned into a 1 hour and 45 min trip. My mother and myself were so aggravated, because she said "oh don't bring the GPS, we don't need it, we know where we are going" well as it turns out...no we didn't! (my mother and myself are really, really good with directions, so we can be very confident with where we are going) And once we got there, I knew EXACTLY where I was, and there were 1 billion easier ways to get there, because I worked right near there when I was with 101.5 FM Radio!

So all I have to say is that the city of Trenton needs to learn to fix their roadsigns because they are TERRIBLE!! I think that might be something I mention to our new Governor, Chris Christie?? Maybe the Governor will actually know who Miss New Jersey is now?!

Then last night, I was invited to be interview by students at Salem Community College for one of their assignments. I really enjoyed talking with the students because they had some really great questions that really challenged me! I appreciate their enthusiasm, so a big SHOUT OUT to Mr. Clark's Tuesday night Journalism Class! Thank you all again! Also, thank you to Barb Lynch (Miss Salem County ED) for inviting me to join them!

Well since I last blogged, I have some terrible news to share, but my dearest little puppy Molly passed away on Thursday afternoon, while I was singing lessons. She unfortunately was infected with Lyme Disease, and the infection went right to her Kidneys, and we were unable to reverse the effects of it on her little body. She was only 6 years old, and had such a friendly and loving personality. She will be greatly missed in our family.

But, my life certainly hasn't stopped in the midst of all the chaos at home, and I have been very busy over the past week!

I have some great news! First, we will be hosting the "Miss New Jersey 2009 Feel Great, 5K Run Walk" on December 6th at the Mercer County Park. Registration can be done online at www.therunningcompany.com and its $20 per runner. The run/walk starts at 9:30, but regsitration will begin at 7:30 am. Proceeds will benefit my platform "A Healthy Weight to Feel Great" and the Children's Miracle Network!

Also, the "Official Miss New Jersey 2009 Cookbook: Healthy, Kid-friendly, and Affordable Recipes" is now on sale! It is a $5 donation to the Children's Miracle Network! For more information, please contact me directly!

On Tuesday I was off to Johnson&Johnson where I met with some Executives in the Healthcare industry regarding my platform, marketing techniques, as well as discussing healthcare. I want to thank Mr. Jim Mitchell and Mrs. Jeri Thomas for their time, and being so willing to help me out!

Wednesday, I was up bright an early for the Rutgers Health and Science Fair which was held on the Douglass Campus. I had a wonderful day meeting with students and professors in the school, and signed many autographs! Later on in the afternoon I was a part of a panel discussion for "Healthy Body Image." Although it was the first year for the event, the fair was definitely a success and it was great to educate the Rutgers community on living a healthy lifestyle.

Friday, I was once again in the car traveling to Newark with Sally where we dined at the wonderful "Forno's of Spain" with Rafael Torro, Director of Public Relations for Goya Foods. We discussed the event I will be doing with Goya on November 11th. So I'm really excited for that, it is going to be a really great day, with some excellent food!

Also, I received an e-mail for approval of my page in the Miss America 2010 Competition Magazine, and I just got chills! I can't believe the page is for me! I can't wait til the magazine comes out in December!

Saturday was the busiest day of the week for me, as I started the day at the Hillsborough Star Diner on Rt. 206. Although it was raining, I had a great day and ate breakfast with the Hillsborough Fire Dept, Police Department, and also the Mayor. During the day I greeted guests and towards the afternoon I was interviewed by EBR-TV about the organization and the opportunities it provides for women such as myself. But please, if you find yourself in Hillsborough, stop by this great diner, their food is great, and they have some of the best French Toast!

As soon as we were done, Sally and myself raced to Avalon for the Miss Avalon/Miss South Jersey local pageant. It was a great pageant, and I want to congratulate our two new titleholders Christine Giardina, Miss Avalon 2010, and Krysten Moore, Miss South Jersey 2010! I look forward to seeing both young women compete at Miss New Jersey, as they are both phenomenol young women! Also, I want to make a special mention to Kristi Pawlus, as she gave her final farewell, after seven years in the system. Kristi is truly an amazing young woman, who embodies what this organization is all about, and I want to thank her for the kind words in her farewell.

I finished my week with an exciting trip to the Giants game on Sunday night. Although they lost, I still had a blast, and the energy from the crowd was really exciting. I'm just hoping the Giants start to turn things around!

I think that one of the coolest things that Miss New Jersey gets during her year of service, is the support and love from the one and only Sally Johnston. You see, nowadays with the Miss America pageant going through so many changes, and not many state titleholders get to experience what it means to have a State Traveling Companion, but New Jersey does! Sally has the very difficult job of dealing with my tantrums, loud mouth, gum-chewing, and anal-retentiveness. But her unwavering spirit, has really taught me so much, and taught me to be a much more easy-going and relaxed Miss NJ, which I totally need!

But, what many don't get to experience, or really know is just how silly Sally really is. She has some of the most ridiculous stories I have ever heard, and on Friday I was near tears from laughter from this story she told me (a little bit to explicit for the blog, sorry!) The best stories are about her adventures with previous Miss New Jersey's. As a young girl, I've epitomized the women who have preceded me, and don't get me wrong, I still do. But, Sally's stories make these women so real, and make me feel so unbelievably blessed that I am to be named a "sister." These women have achieved extraordinary things, even before the title of Miss New Jersey, and continue to do so. They have had many trials and tribulations, but what makes them so wonderful, is that they refused to let the negative rule their life. They made something of themselves, and have triumphed because of it. I think that is one of the greatest lessons I can take from these very beautiful and talented women.

But with all the stories, I'm still working very hard, Sally and myself just spend a lot of time in the car together! Thursday afternoon, I was invited to cut the ribbon for a new restaurant in Hamilton, called "El Sham." They have an authentic Mediterranean cuisine, that is simply delicious! Sally and myself both tasted the Falafel, and I had the Chicken Kabob Sandwich, which was so fresh! The entire family was so hospitable, and kept having us try all the different foods. My favorite is the Baklava, but we won't tell my trainer that I had a taste of that ;-) If you are in the Hamilton area, near S. Olden Avenue, stop by "El-Sham," for a true taste of the Middle Eastern Culture, I promise you won't regret it!

Friday, Sally and myself were off to Stone Harbor to meet with a new Sponsor. It was a bit of a rough start to the day because I over-slept my alarm, and had to rush to get ready to meet Sally. Yes, I woke up at 8:52 am and I was supposed to meet Sally at 9:00am. So I ran to get ready, and did the most dangerous thing, and did my make up in the car. Needless to say, we were still on time!

Finally, Saturday I was the invited guest at the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation "Casino Night." I had such a wonderful time meeting with new people and signing autographs, and then at the end of the night I helped with giving out the raffles. I want to thank Marie Ondy for inviting me, as well as the Kanka Family for being warriors, and protecting young persons such as myself, from experiencing the same fate as their beloved daughter. This is a foundation that is very close to my heart because this was something that hit so close to home.

The Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by the Kanka family, dedicated to preventing the vicitimizaton of innocent children. Megan Kanka was a 7 year old girl who was raped and murdered by a neighbor, unbenknownst to the Kanka family, that neighbor was a convicted sexual offender. The family worked tirelessly to have "Megan's Law" enacted into New Jersey law, stating that a neighborhood deserves notification when a convicted sex offender moves into the area. The Foundation strives to protect the children of not only New Jersey, but across the country.

So now starts another week of craziness. Please continue to pray for my little puppy. She is still very sick, and we hope that the antibiotics that she is on now, can kick her system back to normal.

Wow, what a weekend it has been. I feel like I say that a lot, but every day is another new adventure, and every week brings on more challenges, and Columbus Day weekend, was certainly the true test of a Champion! But I was so excited to be at my home local pageant, and be there as their second Miss New Jersey in a row!!

The weekend began on Thursday with a visit to my voice teacher for a final practice before the weekend, then Saturday was the big Atlantic City Columbus Day Parade, in honor of me! It was just a bit chilly, but we had so much fun waving to everyone on the boardwalk. All the Miss Columbus Day, Miss Atlantic County, and Miss Bonnie Blue's Outstanding Teen contestants were a part of the festivities and placed on their own float, with the beautiful Krysten Gavigan, Miss Atlantic County 2009. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Foundation and all the girls!

Quickly after the parade we went straight to rehearsal for the pageant the next day. I was unfortunately feeling very tired and sick, but made it through the long day, and tried to get some sleep that night because the next day was going to be action packed!

Sunday, Sally and I were up bright and early to head to Seaside Park for the Ocean County Columbus Day Parade! My driver was a novice to parades, and was so honored that he had Miss NJ for his very first parade! Everyone along the parade route was so excited to see me, and made me feel so loved! It was especially nice to see all the awesome Giants jersey's along the parade route! I felt right at home! Unfortunately, I was late for another appearance, so Sally and myself were quickly on the road (although we did try to break the law, in an attempt to escape faster from Seaside)

I flew down the parkway to make it to the Columbus Day pageant for the second half, for my grand entrance! My parents escorted me into the theatre to the USC Trojan Marching Band, and I was so excited that it was my grand entrance! I remember last year watching Ashley Fairfield have hers, and I wanted it so badly to be me, but also how much I wanted to be Miss Columbus Day 2009.

I had such a wonderful time at the pageant singing "Sisters" from White Christmas with my beautiful sister, Krysten. Also, singing my talent for Miss America. I have to thank the Columbus Day Committee and Bonnie Blue for the generous award of a $1,000 cash scholarship to me for my efforts throughout the next year. I was so honored and it means so much to have their unending love and support behind me!

After everything was all said and done I was so proud to pass on the crown of Miss Columbus Day 2010 to Katie Berry, who I'm sure will do a wonderful job at representing the organization! Also, a huge congrats goes out to Lindsey Petrosh for winning Miss Atlantic County, and the first ever Miss Bonnie Blue's Outstanding Teen Adele Taylor! We have three fabulous titleholders, who are all beautiful and talented young women! I'm so excited to see them at their respective competitions! They are going to be fabulous!

After a late night out celebrating with everyone (and a slight mishap to my beautiful Jetta, which is another story for another time) Sally and I were up bright and very very early on Monday morning to make the trek into NYC for the Columbus Day Parade in NYC. At first, from what I was told, I thought I was going to be in a red Fiat. But when I arrived, I found out that actually, it was a Red Ferrari F1 360 Spider. Not a bad ride huh? Mr. Joe and Mr. Ponti were my drivers for the day, and were so excited to have me in their car! Mr. Joe kept saying how he was the luckiest driver, but it was definitely an adventure to be with them. Then, getting on TV two times, was really cool! I didn't think we were going to get on TV.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation was so hospitable and gave us breakfast and lunch, which was so delicious! I met some really amazing people, and even got to spend time with the beautiful Miss New York, Alyse Zwick! We had the chance to sit down for lunch together, and we exchanged contact information! We are so close, we have to get in touch more! The "New" states have to stick together! Overall I would say it was quite the adventure!

There is so much going on, and so many decisions to make! So, look out for my next blog post about the restaurant opening at "El Sham," my sponsorship with "Talk of the Walk," and the Megan Kanka Foundation Casino Night!

I know it may seem silly that I have Miley Cyrus lyrics here, but this particular song has really become my anthem over the past year, even before Miss New Jersey. I believe that there really is a strong message to be learned from this song!

Things have been busy as walways, and I have been diligently working on figuring out another charity event, as well as putting together the final pieces to my new coloring book. I'm very excited about these things! I've also been very busy with preparations, and of course you can always find me working out at the gym! I also had to have a cavity filled, which was very depressing because this is my first cavity in over 18 years. The doctor had to numb my entire right side, and I couldn't eat much less talk. Then our water pump broke in the house, so no running water, which is always fun!

Saturday, I went to the Miss Columbus Day and Atlantic County rehearsal. I'm so excited for this weekends festivities! Even though I don't want to loose my beautiful sister, Krysten, the show is going to be a great show! It has been such a wonderful year to spend with her. She has been so supportive, and such a great inspiration in my life. She has taught me so much about life, and her ability to embrace every experience is something I truly admire about her! I don't think I could have been any luckier than to have her in my life. She has become my family, and I'm so proud to say that our friendship will certinaly span beyond pageantry!

Then on Monday I'm going to be in the NYC Columbus Day Parade, which will be broadcast LIVE on NBC at 10am! So watch for me!!

Monday I did my contestant lottery for Miss America. That was such an intense experience! Waiting to see New Jersey pop-up in the little box was enough to cause an ulcer! I almost lost my spot, when NJ finally popped up in the box because I had only 5 minutes to make the decision, and when I dialed my phone kept cutting out! I was near tears when I finally got through, took a deep breath and selected the #16 spot in the Alpha group! Which means that I do Interview-Monday (PM), Talent-Tuesday, On stage Question-Wednesday, and Swimsuit/Eveningwear-Thursday. I'm really excited about my placement, and so happy things worked out!

One of the greatest parts of the job of Miss New Jersey is that it forces you to step outside your comfort zone, and experience a whole new world. The various individuals who I have had the pleasure of meeting, come from all walks of life, and impart so much wisdom and experience that I truly cherish as I prepare for Miss America. I think networking is becoming my favorite pastime :-)

Since we last spoke, my weeks have been filled with preparations, phone calls, fittings, meetings, appearances, and trying to catch up with some old friends! Things have been happening that I still can't believe are coming true, but this is truly the time of my life! I can't believe that it's almost October! Time is just flying by!

My trainer has been kicking my butt, as my status on Facebook says frequently. I'm making huge progress, and I'm so proud of how far I've come. The challenges I face in the gym, I believe mentally prepare me for all the challenges of my life because they force me to focus my thoughts and my energy. Health and Fitness are truly a passion of mine, and I know that if I can do this, anyone can!

A week ago I was the featured guest at the "Miss Moorestown Estates" Pageant. Moorestown is an assisted living facility, and I served as a judge and also sang for the residents. But it was a very difficult decision, they were very talented, and one of the women baked for us! It was very hard not to be swayed! In the end, we named Frances, "Miss Moorestown Estates 2009!" She is 85 years young, and collects stuffed animals from around the country. (If anyone has seen my room, you can see how I identified with her!) She was so shocked that we chose her, but she was such a kind and loving woman. It felt so good to see her smile, and enjoy the experience!

Since then, my Dale Carnegie courses have really kept me busy! It's so weird to have homework again, but my instructor is fabulous, and getting to know my classmates has been a really wonderful opportunity. And of course, meeting with some of my new sisters, former Miss NJs, who have become such an instrumental part of my reign and support system!

I have also begun meeting with the esteemed, David Gross, who is working with me on my music for Miss America. David is one of the most talented pianists I have had the pleasure of working with, and I'm confident in his ability to produce a beautiful piece of music!

Unfortunately, my Golf Outing had to be canceled, however, we are planning another event later in the month of October. For now, I'm focusing on putting together my new coloring book, as well as getting ready to crown the new Miss Columbus Day! It's going to be such a great event! I hope everyone will be able to attend that double crown, as well as the parade on the Atlantic City boardwalk on Saturday the 10th at 11am.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the crownings of Miss Eastern and Miss Atlantic Shores Pageant as well as the Miss Mercer County and Miss Mercer County Outstanding Teen crowning. I want to congratulate Maggie Sabota, Brenna Welsh, and Courtney Charataris for winning their crowns. Also, I would like to wish all the best to Katie Berry, Miss Mercer County 2009. She was a fabulous representative for the crown, and I wish her continued success in all aspects of her life.

Wheew! What a week it has been! I have so many exciting things to tell you! But first, I wanted to Congratulate Katie Hope for a job well done at the National Sweetheart pageant. From the pictures I saw, she looked beautiful, and made NJ so proud! We know that she is a true Sweetheart!

I'm so excited to announce that I've been diligently working to re-create my coloring book "Harry the Healthy Horse," which will be used throughout my lessons with my younger students. A very good friend of mine agreed to completely re-design "Harry" and some of the scenes. He is a fabulous artist, and I'm so excited to implement this in my curriculum. Also, I'm in the beginning stages of my Miss NJ "Healthy Recipes" Cookbook, which I'm hoping to sell to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network! Stay tuned for details!

My week began at the 40-74 Magazine Photo shoot on Wednesday. The photographer was so much fun, and they made me feel like a queen! I can't wait to see the final product in the November issue of 40-74 magazine in the "Passions" section of the magazine! From what I'm told, they are basing my spread on the Bruce Springsteen "Welcome to Asbury Park" Album Cover!

Later that night I met with the Hyacinth Foundation to discuss my appearance at their AIDS Foundation Gala in November. It is going to be a great night, and I'm looking forward to performing with their live band! The next day I was on my way to my voice lessons in NYC and other preparations for Miss A.

Friday I was on my way in the monsoon weather to CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia), with Sally holding on for dear life in the passenger's seat. We arrived safely, even though my GPS was no help whatsoever! (When you are by the hospital, it's a complete maze because of it's enormity!) Once there, I enjoyed the afternoon at the CMN Radiothon with Miss PA and Miss DE, who are always great to be with! We decorated crowns, signed TONS of autographs, met the President of the Hospital, Dr. Altschuler, and Dr. Phil! (Yes, he does wear makeup!!)

Working with the children of CMN is always such a humbling experience. They are some of the most resilient young people, no matter how much pain they were in. The experience reminds me why I am there, and to continue to fight for their cause. A young girl named Karena was in so much pain, but wanted to be a part of the festivities and meet Miss NJ so bad, she fought through it. Another young boy was waiting for a heart transplant and he just had the biggest smile on my face, and jumped for joy when he took a picture with us.

Saturday I was off to begin party planning! I could not believe that this was going to be for my send-off to Miss America! It blew my mind! Mark it on your calendars, January 2, 2010 at the Sheraton, Atlantic City!!! I can't spill too many details, but I can say that we are going to DANCE the night away!!

Finally on Sunday I attend Millstone Day, which is my hometown's fair. I was treated to first class treatment the minute I arrived, I felt so honored! Everyone from the town was ecstatic to meet me, and made me feel so loved! They surprised me with the Mayor's Award, and my Assemblywoman presented me with a State of New Jersey Proclamation from our State Senators! I was truly speechless, and cannot even begin to describe what that meant to me!

It certainly is not an easy job being Miss New Jersey, and I'm constantly faced with new obstacles each day. I remind myself each day of who I represent, and how I'm blessed with so many people who provide me with strength and love. Things will only get more challenging, so I appreciate those who have expressed their support and genuine love. This helps to keep me grounded, and live each day to the fullest, because life is going by way too fast!!

After this weekend, and being a part of my best friend's wedding, I had to comment on the one thing that happened all weekend...

One of the funniest things I have encountered as Miss New Jersey, is that fact that when people first meet you, they think you are this weird alien from outer space. People have so many misconceptions about "beauty queens" because for them, it's not everyday that someone gets to meet a Miss State. It's almost as if to them, you aren't a real person, which I think is hysterical because as soon as the crown is off my head, I'm just like everyone else again. It's like the crown has magical transformation powers.

Trust me, I'm real. (I've even had a little girl stroke my hand to make sure I was real) I make mistakes, quite frequently actually. I also get cranky and mean sometimes. Yes, I eat. No, I don't throw up after I eat. No, I don't have nude photos. No, I haven't had plastic surgery. Yes, we really do use butt glue. Yes, my teeth are real. Yes, we are allowed to have boyfriends. Yes, I am single. No, I'm not interested. (This particular group of answers usually comes from creepy old men, and unfortunately you have to always smile and nod) Yes, I know Miss CA! No...not Carrie Prejean. (Thank you Carrie Prejean for ruining feathers for me, I will never wear them now!) But, I really pride myself in being me. I'm not your "typical" girl/beauty queen, and I'm fine with that. I don't want to be like everyone else :-)

Anyway, getting back to the wedding. It was such a great two days to spend with my closest friends. See, my friends are my world because they have been there throughout college, and there are six girls in particular that I lived with for four years, so when I get to see them, I'm finally in my element. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but I knew I would because I'm such a big baby. But I just kept thinking about all the fun Kate and I had when we were roommates in I1.

The rehearsal went very well, I got chills practicing and watching Kate walk down the aisle with her Dad. Kate presented the bridesmaids with these absolutely beautiful Sterling Silver Tiffany's bracelets. We were so ecstatic to receive them, we were just so happy to be there to celebrate with Kate and Steve. Friday night, neither myself or Rachel slept. I don't know if I had so much on my mind, or if it was the ridiculously uncomfortable and noisy pull out bed. But we were up bright and early the next morning to get our hair done.

Kate was unbelievably calm the entire time. But I guess I would rather her be that way, because if you know you are happy and with the right person, your wedding day shouldn't be stressful. On Saturday morning, it was like there was a new woman standing in front of me. I was totally fine, even with her putting on the dress, I didn't cry! Of course, I didn't have time too, but Kate looked like a princess. She was glowing! It was the most surreal experience to watch this friend of mine, take one of the biggest steps in her life. I don't know if I can really explain it, but there was all this symbolism and it was as if, everything was happening the way it was supposed to.

At the church we were getting her veil on, and I was helping to fix it. As soon as I looked up at her, I began to sob like a child. The veil made it all real at that point. When she walked down the aisle with her father, I completely lost it. But she just looked wonderful! We danced the afternoon away together, and got to see all my close friends who I haven't seen in months! At the end we saw the lovely couple off on their honeymoon to the Mediterranean. We continued to party with Kate's entire family, until Rachel and I headed back off to CT for the night. I don't think we could have asked for a more perfect day!

Well it's already September! This is crazy! Where did the summer go?!

Although I have not had a busy appearance schedule this week, I've still had my hands full organizing so many different things. Not to mention my best friend is getting married this weekend! Eek!

I want to give a BIG shout out to our Jersey Girl, Katie Hope, who is representing New Jersey at the Sweetheart pageant in Hoopeston, Illinois. I was just given news that her interview went well, so I'm confident she is having the time of her life! Keep her in your prayers everyone! :-)

Have no fear, I've been diligently working out at the gym. For those of you who follow my status on Facebook, you know I'm either getting my butt kicked by Linda, or at bootcamp or even doing some more Cardio. I'm pooped, but the benefits are so worth the hardwork! I had to go and buy myself a new pair of sneakers, which turned out to cause some blisters on the back of my feet, but nothing a few band-aids can't handle! I guess I have developed my own version "dancers feet!"

With all my travels and duties, my poor car is taking a beating. The gas attendants know me by name now with the amount of times I'm at the pump! But they still call me "Miss New Joi-zee" (notice the prounciation of 'Jersey') My Jetta is so dirty that a white car looks like it's off-white or ivory, Ew! I think I need a car wash sponsor!

Now I'm off to celebrate the marriage of my best friend and roommate, Kate O'Connor, soon to be Kate Prairie in Sturbridge, MA. (Hey Miss Mass, call me so we can meet up! lol) This is very bittersweet for me, she is the first of our friends to tie the knot, and one of my closest friends. She was the first girl I talked to the first day of band camp at Marist College, and we have been friends ever since! So I guess it's fitting she is the "first" wedding too!

She has been there through every pageant I've been in, and knew I could do it! She is my fellow "balla" as we joke around because we diligently followed college basketball together, although she is a UConn Fan, I accept it because she did grow up 20 minutes away from the University. I will be back with plenty of photos to share with everyone!

The Calm before the Storm

The end of summer. For some it means moving back to college, beginning a new grade or even in a new school completely. For Miss New Jersey, it means even more time at voice lessons, endless hours at the gym, and my head completely engulfed by interview preparations. For Ashley Shaffer, however, it also means, the beginning of FOOTBALL SEASON!!! WOO!!!

Yes, I'm so excited for College Game Day and Sunday Football (wait til November when College Basketball starts, I get worse!) So even though my preparations for Miss America will be consuming my time and focus, at least I have football to help me get away, now that I will no longer have the beach!

This past week was the calm before the storm. I enjoyed my final day at the beach, as well as the last cup of Ice Cream (even though, I hardly ever eat Ice Cream, I figured I would treat myself one last time to celebrate the end of the summer season). But my duties as Miss New Jersey certainly continued, Miss New Jersey never gets a vacation! Haha!

First, Miss New Jersey wouldn't be here without her great volunteers! A HUGE thank you goes out to Joan Lucas! She has been instrumental in helping me get some gifts for the golf outing, and she always spoils me with such great gifts! Thank you so much Joan for all of your love, encouragement, and generosity!

Also, Silvia and Lou, you know how much I love the two of you for always being so supportive of me and my dreams! Thank you for the lovely dresses again, and thank you for the love not only that you show me, but to each of the young women who enter this organization!!

Wednesday I interviewed with the wonderful Gary Gellman, and "Let's Talk." It was a great interview, and he might be able to get me to sing for the Giants during the football season, which would be the ultimate dream come true! Once I find out more information about air-time I will pass it along!

I also attended the Miss Allstate pageant on Saturday night. Brittany and Joan once again put on a great pageant! I was able to meet Mr. Delaware 2008, Chris Saltalamacchio and Miss Kent County 2009, Julie Fuller from Delaware who were both so nice and fun! My heartfelt congratulations goes out to Ashleigh Udalovas being crowned Miss Allstate 2010! Also, great job to all the contestants, you were all so intelligent and talented, please continue to compete because this organization will help you gain more than you can ever ask for!

BEFORE I FORGET, a huge shout out to Cadet Sergeant Gavin Kent White for inviting me to his 500 days ball in January. I leave 3 days before for Miss America, but I wanted to thank him publicly for the invitation! I'm so honored and flattered that he would ask me to attend! Thank you for you service to our country!

When you become Miss State, it is one of the greatest things to ever happen to a young girl who has dreamed of being Miss America. But, it is so important to remember that there will be people who want to say they helped you, or want to say they are your friend, but you know they aren't. As Miss State you have to be so careful as to who you let in your "bubble." I'm so lucky to say that I have a wonderful group of individuals who have been there before the crown. So I'm dedicating this blog to them. The certain number of individuals who have been everything to me. My Family.

First, Rosanna Consalvo Sarto and the entire Columbus Day and Bonnie Blue Foundation. You have become my family, and a truly wonderful group of individuals. Thanks to your guidance and advice, I was able to achieve my dream of becoming Miss New Jersey. Thank you for everything.

To Linda, my superwoman, trainer, and best friend--Thank you for kicking my butt, and truly always pushing me for 4 years! You are an inspiration to me, and have become like family to me. You may not realize it, but you have changed my life. I am a better woman because of you!

To my best friends--Kristin, Kristy, Alex, Rachel, Kate, Kevin, Jeanette, Lauren, Denise, Peter, Brett, Mark and everyone else who I text, BBM, and/or Facebook on a semi-daily, weekly basis, thank you for touching my life, and your continued love and support. She always knew I would do great things with my life, so now I am doing great things for her! (she passed in 2003, so there are no recent photos of me, but I know she is smiling down on me everyday I wear the crown)

To my sister and best friend, and the woman I admire so much--Words will never be enough for me to thank you for being the greatest sister! You have always taken care of me, and shown me endless support and love, even when I'm the biggest brat in the world. You have been the greatest role model someone could ask for. Your beauty, brains, and strength are incredible, and you deserve the world. I love you more than you will ever know!

This final section, is dedicated to the two people who have to deal with me Day-in and Day-out. Who have yet to throw me out, even through my moods and attitude. Who pick me up when I fall, who still feed me, who know what I look like in the morning, who still give me money if I need it, and never stop loving me for being me! Crown or no crown, they have always believed in my abilities without falter. They were honest, but kind and have shaped me into a woman.

Beyond pageantry and the endless amount of time they have dedicated to help me become Miss New Jersey, they know me for me. All the time I yell at the TV when the Giants aren't playing well, my converse sneakers and ripped jeans vs. heels and Sherri Hill evening gowns, the endless amount of gum I chew, and the fact that I still break out in zits! They never stopped teaching me that a lady's real beauty comes from the heart, and having love in your life, you can move mountains! They are my rock. I certainly would be here without them, literally. But, they have made me Miss New Jersey, but more importantly a better woman. I love you, Mom & Dad, more than you will ever know!

Back to reality...

For years I have dreamed about being Miss New Jersey, and you always hear what former Miss New Jersey's have experienced, but never would I have thought that I would be Miss New Jersey. When people say, "Hey! That's Miss New Jersey!" I still want to turn and say "Where?!" It's truly an indescribable feeling to have achieved my dream to be at Miss America. And, you always think you know what comes with the territory, but until you live it, you have no idea.

Truly, a surreal experience, cannot even put into words...

Upon my return home from Orlando, I was quickly thrown right back into reality, and enlightened with a renewed sense of focus and determination. My thirst for success invigorates my quest for the Miss America crown. I'm truly unlike any Miss New Jersey, my journey was quite different to the crown, and I intend on making it one of the best years of my life.

I've been meeting with various individuals, organizing my Golf Outing to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network. I'm also beginning a cookbook filled with healthy recipes and ideas for parents and families to promote healthy lifestyles in the home. This cookbook will be sold, and proceeds will benefits local school health programs, and the Children's Miracle Network.

Wednesday I interviewed with the esteemed Joan Hamberg about my road ahead for Miss America, and some of the many things I have to look forward to as Miss New Jersey. She was just so much fun to talk to!

I've also begun preparations for Columbus Day Weekend, as I prepare to crown the new Miss Columbus Day. I'm so excited for that weekend to be a part of the festivities, but I'm really sad because my sister will be giving up her title as Miss Atlantic County 2009. I really don't want to think about that, because I will start to cry again.

Saturday I attended the Miss Seashore Line/Coastal Shore/Cape Shores triple crown pageant. A BIG congratulations goes out to the newly crowned local titleholders Kate Bozzelli, Brianna Durand, and Kayla Ghanavati. I wish you all the best of luck, and a successful year! I also had the chance to sit and speak with the panel of judges who were so much fun, and a great way for me to practice my interviewing skills! They had so many questions, it was so much fun to get to know them!

I also received my Swimsuit Plaque from Silvia on Saturday, and that is the one trophy that I will cherish forever. The hard work and focus it took to achieve that is beyond anything I could have imagined. It's going up very high on my wall!

It is now August, and I can't believe that I have been Miss New Jersey for 2 months already! I thought July was great, but August has turned out to be even better! There has been so much since my last blog, and I can't wait to share it with you! Before I do, I have some exciting news!

I traveled to South Carolina in late July to spend time with my family, but they threw me a fabulous Welcome Party! Everyone was so supportive, and they are all looking to travel to Las Vegas to support New Jersey! After returning home I attended the Miss Maine Invitational. I was able to meet a few of the other contestants including Virgin Islands, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, and District of Columbia. We toured Schoppy's, the Miss America offices, as well as the infamous Boardwalk Hall. I even sang a few notes on the stage. There is nothing more exciting than to be on that stage! The girls were so much fun, and I can't wait to spend more time with them. I can't forget about Night in Venice, and the fabulous Nancy and Art Abbot for their generosity! Their boat is amazing, and I had so much fun dancing and singing the entire parade!

I started the month of August at the Westfield Summer Day Camp. The students were so much fun, and I received a beautiful picture from a young girl named Morgan. Also, I was asked by a little boy who looked exactly like Harry Potter, to draw the scar on his forehead like Harry. He wanted me to make sure I told everyone that I met someone famous! On August 4th I attended National Night Out in Freehold, New Jersey signing autographs, and meeting with Freehold Township Committeemen. This event was dedicated to ending violence in our communities, and uniting the citizens together. The support from my neighboring community was so much appreciated.

Being the Grand Marshal at the Cape May Baby Parade was such an honor, and the babies were just so adorable! I also shared lunch with Queen Maysea 2009. I've also been very busy with my Golf Outing! Please if you are interested in sponsoring or playing the tournament, it's going to be a great time! I hope that everyone will come out and support this great cause!

Now for Orlando, first let me congratulate my beautiful little sister, BRENNA WEICK, 1st RUNNER - UP to MAOT! She was just absolutely beautiful all week, and everyone just adored her. I could not be more proud of her and her accomplishment!

Orlando was also such a great time to meet with all of the contestants. We had VIP access to Universal and experienced the new Simpsons ride, Spiderman, Men in Black, and two Rollarcoasters, which were the best part! It was so hot that day, but the girls were so much fun! Thursday Morning we were up bright and early to tape for TLC and the first meeting with Miss America, and Sam Haskell. That was so much fun, and then my personal interview with TLC Online went so well. I LOVE the camera, and had such a blast. We did a few promotional photo shoots for Miss America's new Go Green initiative. I did a little shopping as well as with my roommates Massachusetts, California, and Kentucky. Friday night we had the opportunity to attend a Miss America Fundraiser at the beautiful Siegel Estate in Orlando, the food was amazing, and we danced the night away!

My fellow MAO Class of 2010 contestants were so sweet and great to get to know. It's so weird to say that one of the 53 young women I met, will be the next Miss America. I'm so excited for January just to get to spend more time with them all! I LOVED my roommates, we also enjoyed some quality snuggie time! But all the girls are just so much fun, when everything was all said and done we were so upset that we had to leave, but we all had our duties to attend to in our own state! Especially me!

I rushed off the plane on Sunday afternoon to Atlantic City where I sang the National Anthem at a "Welcome Home" party at the Taj Mahal for members of the 50th IBTC Brigade. It was so great to welcome them home and thank our service men and women for the many sacrifices they made.

So that's it for now, but I can't wait to share my many other adventures throughout the next few months as I prepare for the Miss America Pageant!
